Spring Melodies in the Club

April 24th, 2018

“Spring Music” was the topic of the meeting with Inge Duwe on Tuesday, 24 April 2018.

She has given interesting musical presentations in the past and today was no exception.  We started with traditional spring songs that many of our members knew from their childhoods.

Robert Schumann’s “Spring Symphony” introduced us to the romantic music of the 19th century. Frau Duwe explained the cultural context of this well-loved composition.

Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” (Le sacre du printemps) was a sensation when it was first played; today it is heard frequently in concerts.  Frau Duwe explained and played examples of the uniqueness and revolutionary characteristics of this work.

At the conclusion of her talk we sang a traditional 16. century song “So treiber wir den Winter aus” („Thus We Drive the Winter Out“), with an explanation of the musical characteristics of that time period.

We thanked Frau Duwe with loud applause and flowers for her interesting talk and musical accompaniment.
