This is the day when the historical “Strohmannes” company carry out their traditional parade through the centre of the Dukedom town of Jülich.
As in every year the sound of music announced the approach of the group. The brass band and the dancers gathered outside of the Research Station’s Guesthouse where they were enthusiastically welcomed by members of the International club, all gaily costumed.
The members of this traditional group, dressed in their habitual blue jackets and white trousers, using white sheeting, they tossed the straw filled figure into the air. While doing so they chanted mocking rhymes, ridiculing people or things they disagree with.
International Club medals were presented to the members of the Lazerus Strohmannes association by our president, Myriam Woischnik, and the vice president, Rolf Skowronek, supported by other members of the committee.
After a small toast, the parade continued, happily, on its way through the town.
We were left, happy to return to the warmth of the club room, for although the sun was shining, the wind was icy.
With coffee, donuts and curd balls and the rendering of several Carnival songs, we enjoyed the remainder of a cheerful morning.
